Unconstitutional
Today I went out to distribute fliers for a couple of candidates for office here in Utah. Only one of those candidates was a Libertarian, the other was a Constitution Party candidate. Both races were very close the last time around (two years ago, one of the incumbents won his office by only 86 votes) and pamphletering on behalf of another candidate could no doubt prove to change that incumbent's chances this year; by either swinging the vote or even getting our candidate into office instead.
In both cases, the time was well spent, I believe.
The other thing I did was attend a showing of "Unconstitutional," a documentary film on the effects of the USA PATRIOT Act and surrounding policies and legislation. It's a very well-made film and I highly recommend it. The group who sponsored it at this showing is the Underground Video Resistance. The film itself was sponsored by the ACLU.
Before the movie, a friend of mine and brother-in-arms against the Patriot Act, Reinard Knudtsen from the ACLU of Utah spoke for about ten minutes about the USAPA.
The Libertarian Party of Utah was there (Charlie Bonsall, the Executive Director, attended with me) and a couple of Ralph Nader supporters as well.
The film is great, but the attendance was, sadly, not very good. I suspect that holding the event on Halloween night had something to do with that, since many parties, trick-or-treating, and so forth no doubt took precendent for people. I know that a couple of people I invited to come couldn't because they were taking their children out trick-or-treating. I don't know any Jehovah's Witnesses, so I couldn't find anyone who didn't believe in Halloween to invite them.
Anyway, if you get the chance (they will be showing the film regularly, so check their website), I would highly recommend taking an hour or two out of your life and seeing this movie.
