Bill of Rights Defence Committee News

I received the following from the BoRDC and thought that you, my loyal readers, nay-sayers, and antagonists, might find it interesting:

I am writing to point you to some new resources we've recently posted on the People's Campaign for the Constitution (PCC) website and to invite your organization to sign on to a memo regarding the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act.

The PCC is gaining momentum with people already pledged in more than 100 communities in 35 states. You can see where there are at http://www.constitutioncampaign.org/map/. You can sign up to participate in the People's Campaign for the Constitution here: http://www.constitutioncampaign.org/

PCC Video Project
BORDC is producing a short video to support the PCC and local education, and we want it to start with grassroots voices like yours naming what they believe is the most outrageous abuse in the "War on Terror." If you or a friend has a video camera, please help us by recording yourself and perhaps friends, and posting it to youtube.com. Deadline is Tuesday, May 27. For more information, go to http://constitutioncampaign.org/toolkit/video.php.

PCC Organizer Toolkit
BORDC is releasing a new step-by-step organizer toolkit for the People's Campaign for the Constitution that contains suggested steps and supporting materials your local group can use in your congressional district, city, or town to hold elected officials accountable for the oaths they take to protect and defend the Constitution. This toolkit continues to be updated and elaborated. The first of the 5 main phases is most complete. We encourage you to adapt this action outline to the needs of your local coalition, and to share your own contributions with us. To see the whole toolkit: http://www.constitutioncampaign.org/toolkit/steps.php

Independence Day Sign-on Ad
Another highlight of the PCC Toolkit is the "Declaration for our Times" local newspaper ad for Independence Day. If you want to reach out to the public to sound the alarm on the erosion of our Constitution, you may want to consider organizing supporters to run this ad. Find the text and a guide to running an ad here: http://www.constitutioncampaign.org/toolkit/education.php#signature_ad

Sign-on Opportunity: Oppose Unconstitutional "Homegrown Terrorism" Legislation
BORDC and several other national organizations have signed a memo to members of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, criticizing policy proposals such as the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act (H.R. 1955). We invite local and regional organizations to join in signing on, because policies regulating political belief are flatly unconstitutional, and this is an opportunity to speak out against them. Fortunately, this legislation is currently stalled in the Senate following the House's 404-6 approval of it last October in large part due to grassroots organizing against it. We need to continue our organizing so that similar policies do not come back.

Organizations have until May 30 to sign onto the memo. The memo is posted with a box at the top explaining how to sign-on your group: http://www.defendingdissent.org/memo.doc

All the best,

Ben Grosscup
