'The Only Thing We Have to Fear…'

Our valiant defenders scored another huge victory in Gainesville, Florida, last week when they saved the homeland from "apparently abandoned" luggage. Now if only someone would save us from nitwits who’ve abandoned common sense, we’d be all set.

Moises Banrevy is an 18-year-old kid who missed his flight the Monday before Christmas. Heck, I would have, too: it was departing at 7 AM.

Failing to catch your plane in the cuckoo’s nest that passes for American aviation is akin to missing Nurse Ratched’s role call: both unleash disproportionate disaster. If we lived in a world where airlines tried to please customers instead of Congressmen, the industry would not only make allowances for a mishap this common, it would actually help stranded patrons. But governmental bankrolling has turned passengers from aviation’s raison d’être into a necessary evil: airlines must "serve" them or lose the subsidies, bail-outs, and loans flooding their coffers. Meanwhile, they despise customers as so much inconvenient and demanding freight, rather like a friend of mine views tourists to New York City: they keep his clients in business, which keeps him in business, but they certainly clutter the sidewalks. Pushing through the crowds at Rockefeller Center, he sniffs, "Why can’t they just stay home and send us their money?"

Likewise, it would be easier for high-flying corporations if Congress dispensed with the silliness of passengers and simply deposited our taxes directly into the airlines’ accounts. But until that halcyon day dawns, aviation must continue transporting us trouble-makers from Point A to Point B. Nothing says it has to do so courteously and kindly, however. And so when Moises scheduled another flight for later that day, he asked "an airline employee" if he could leave his bags someplace in the interim. Naturally, "the employee told the man that he should not leave his bags unattended, according to Michelle Danisovszky, the airport's public relations manager." Wouldn’t it be nice if a public relations manager actually managed relations with the public sometime rather than spinning an employer’s abuse as ordinary or even commendable?

Moises did what many kids would who’ve yet to discover how larcenous – or ridiculous – their fellowman can be: he chose an out-of-the-way place "near the terminal's new concession stand" which had been "recently renovated" and parked his three bags there. Then he left the airport for whatever 18-year-olds with time to kill in Gainesville do.

Alas, "an airport employee" noticed the bags at 8:15 and "reported" them. Leviathan can’t teach kids to read but it excels at training serfs to snitch. Ten minutes later, Our Rulers were busily saving the nation by hopelessly snarling traffic. "Gainesville Police blocked non-travelers from entering the Gainesville Regional Airport as a precaution and called in" – yes! – "the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad." That particular hysteria resulted "’because we didn't want to second-guess ourselves,’ said GPD Captain Bart Knowles." Good call, there, Bart, given that the second guess would probably have been as boneheaded the first.

Not to be outdone, "the Transportation Security Administration [TSA] took control of the scene." Oh, I’ll bet they did. Did Alexander Haig just pop into your mind, too? These drama queens evacuated the terminal. Fortunately, they didn’t have many victims to hassle: only "about 30 people were working" at that hour, and there were "few passengers or other members of the public…" In so small a group, it seems likely that the "airline employee" with whom Moises had discussed leaving his luggage heard about the "abandoned" bags, connected them with his earlier conversation, and mentioned it. If so, did the cops and the TSA ignore him so they could rescue an airport in absolutely no danger?

Evacuating the terminal didn’t satisfy Our Rulers; they also forced drivers to move their cars from an adjacent parking lot. "…[T]here was concern that if there was a bomb inside the luggage, its blast could be powerful enough to blow out the wall of windows on the south side of the terminal building…." Yep, and meteorites could strike the earth tomorrow. All this "concern" cancelled one departing flight and delayed an incoming one.

Moises may have missed the evacuations, but plenty of excitement still waited when he returned to the airport around 11:30 that morning. He "was escorted by police back into the terminal to open his bags" and "answer questions..." I wonder whether the poor guy immediately came clean about why he packed four pairs of jeans or if he ’fessed up only after some "alternative interrogation techniques."

Regardless, "it was unknown whether then [sic] man would face any charges." Imagine the deliberations at the station house over that one: "F--, nothing in the f------ statute book against leaving your f------ bags at the f------ airport. Wait! He bought a f------ plane ticket! Oh, f---, that ain’t illegal yet. What about f------‘creating a public nuisance’! Yeah, that’ll work, long as no one f------ figures out it was us that created it."

Back at the scene of the crime, Our Rulers declared the homeland secure after all. "We determined that there was nothing suspicious in his luggage," Bart announced. "We're happy it turned out to be poor judgment and not something worse."

Poor judgment and then some. But not on Moises’ part.

Nationalization of Auto Industry Begins Whole-Hog

Treasury Opens Door to Aid for Broad Array of Firms, Industries

My title is more truthful than the facts-only-as-they're-given-to-us title from Bloomberg, linked above. Regardless, this is big news. Not only is the Treasury, thanks to G.W.'s bailout plan for the Big 3 in Detroit, going to bail out the car manufacturers (Ford has been backing off, but don't worry, they'll take the handout eventually), but all the car loan and related industries as well.

This means that, whether you're behind on your payment or not, your car loan might become property of the U.S. Treasury. You think it's bad when the IRS thinks you owe them money? Wait until the Treasury department decides that the IRS and BATFE aren't good enough and creates a new (undoubtedly fully armed) group of underlings to come collect from you.

That $30,000 car you bought and have been diligently paying on with your hard-earned funny money might become a liability. What if your neighbor is defaulting on their car loan and the agents the Treasury sends to collect get the wrong address and kick in your door instead (as happens fairly regularly with the BATFE)? That car loan could now cost you your life.

Ya, I know, I'm being "extremist," but comon. This is what regularly happens when people forget to cross a "T" or carry a .01 on their tax return. It's what happens daily when the ATF decides that your paperwork isn't good enough or your business doesn't seem "legal" enough. Remember, the new "bankruptcy laws" don't apply to debt owed to the government...

So good luck, suckers. With the nationalization of the auto industry well on its way, it's only a matter of time before you or your business come under the radar of the all-encompassing eye of the State. Will you get a "bailout" when it's your turn, or will they be done pretending by then and just take over like they did in Communist Russia, China, and Nazi Germany?

Affirmative Action Security Employees



Watch as these "security" employees take offense at this lady's insistence that she be allowed to watch them rummage through her belongings at this security checkpoint.

They then mob her, throw her to the floor, and handcuff and arrest her. Then they stand around and make sure everyone has the same story for the report.

Nice work. Another terrorist thwarted. Amerika is safer. For the regime, anyway.

Government Works Don’t Work

The bailout bonanza, based as it is on borrowed and counterfeited money, continues unabated.

Huge ‘public’ works are in the offing—every bit as big as Bush’s welfare and warfare programs.

I’m wasting my breath in the increasingly socialist and statist America. But let me try once again:

No government can create jobs; only economic growth in the private sector can create employment opportunities.

Basic understanding of economics is necessary to grasp that there is no free lunch. For every job “created” by government, an unidentifiable job will, tit-for-tat, be destroyed in the private sector.
The images of earnest men and women put to work by the Obama and Bush bailouts will flood the propagandist news networks.

The multitudes thrown out of work because private economic activity has been crowded out by taxing or borrowing to finance job programs will remain invisible. Also invisible will be the destruction of jobs and reduction in investments, purchasing and overall wealth that ensues when money is taxed away from Americans and funneled to the politicians’ patronage playground.

Investors will suffer the same fate and will be much less likely to take employment-generating risks with their capital. Government borrowing simply serves to reduce capital available to the private sector. A further diminution of assets occurs when government expands the money supply and causes inflation in order to finance job creation schemes.

Oklahoma still fighting for Sovereignty

Citizens to Assemble in Support of Bipartisan Legislative Efforts to Protect Oklahomans from the Federal Collection, Sharing and Control of Personal Data.

Oklahoma City–January 3rd there will be “Citizens Assembly for Oklahoma Sovereignty” sponsored by OK-SAFE, R3PUBLICANS, and the Constitutional Alliance along to support the Tenth Amendment Resolution and to show that Oklahoma citizens firmly reject The Real ID Act of 2005 and similar proposals to use personal information or biometrics to enroll Americans in a national identification plan. This bipartisan event is open to all residents of Oklahoma who wish to retain their rights and freedoms as guaranteed by the US Constitution and Bill of Rights should attend this assembly on Jan 3rd at 7 pm to be held at Character First, 520 W. Main in OKC.

State Representative Charles Key and Senator Constance Johnson will be special guest speakers at the assembly and will inform attendees about current proposals before the State Legislature that would protect Oklahoma citizens’ private data from being exposed. Several Bills have been submitted by Oklahoma legislators that specifically address the collection, sharing and retention of personal information and biometrics that put all Americans at risk such as the REAL ID ACT.

US Polycracy

The number of gears in the government machine greased by taxpayer money is staggering. Currently, the US government has 15 major departments, with over 450 supporting and independent agencies. The breadth and depth of these alphabet soup bureaucracies is astounding. Did you know there is a government agency called the Office of Minority Health (OMH)? Are minorities’ physiologies different than the rest of the US population? I mean, don’t ALL Americans have the same concerns with health issues? Who knew? This illustrates the ongoing specialization and redundant creation of myriad organizations spawned by a nanny government. Pick an issue, any issue, no matter how small or insignificant, and – poof! – our progressive government creates ex nihilo another government ancillary to appease the sheeple’s concern that something is being done to address it.

Merely wasting taxpayer money, and ensnaring citizens with new regulations – regulations put in effect without congressional review by said agencies – would be bad enough. But a more sinister trend is occurring among these multitudes of government organizations – the accumulation of personal power. Newly appointed Secretary of the State, Hillary Clinton, is currently pursuing to widen the power to the State department before taking office. Ms. Clinton proposes a bigger budget, additional envoys, and a greater role in economic affairs. Her justification?

Mrs. Clinton’s push for a more vigorous economic team, one of her advisers said, stems from her conviction that the State Department needs to play a part in the recovery from the global financial crisis. Economic issues also underpin some of the most important diplomatic relationships, notably with China.


So our government, which has ripped off trillions in US citizens’ tax dollars via bailouts and the Federal Reserve, without accountability, now wants to assist in repairing the international financial crisis through the State Department? Under "Whitewater" Hillary Clinton? Ok, now if that isn’t the official starting gun for the worldwide apocalypse, nothing is.

This latest development, along with the recent clash between Biden and Cheney on the role of the Vice Presidency, confirms my growing suspicion that the departments in the US government are shifting from a vertical hierarchy to a horizontal network of competing agencies: a system otherwise known as a polycracy. A unique mutation of this polycracy includes the appointment of "Czars" – Drug Czar, Car Czar, Health Czar, Cyber Czar, et al. – all of whom become the proverbial too many cooks that spoil the broth. The habit of government to throw more money at a problem is nothing compared to its obsession to spawn whole litters of power-wielding appointees and boards to advise the advisors of the advisory committees. More ominous is that many agencies are given carte blanche for the unrestricted carry of firearms listed on John Lott's blog. They include Internal Revenue Service agents, Health and Human Services Department, and the Environmental Protection Agency. What, the EPA, armed? Why, so they can shoot litterbugs and non-recyclers? I do agree the Health and Human Services Department should carry guns – so they can mercifully give the coup de grace to those citizens who have suffered under their mediocre, "good enough for government work" care.

At the risk of abusing Goodwin’s Law, this expansion of US departmental power is reminiscent of the polycratic system in the Nazi government. According to "The Hitler State" by Martin Broszat, the Third Reich government resembled an "Organizational Jungle" of competing agencies. Historian Ian Kershaw makes the case that Hitler either sought or unconsciously allowed this "Political Darwinism" to take place to kill off the weak factions and to keep the stronger ones at each other’s throats – to occupy them from making a power grab for Hitler’s position. Only in such an environment could a virtually unknown, weak-chinned, bespectacled chicken hawk with metagaming Machiavellian skills rise to power and control both the internal security police and the State Praetorian Guard. And no, I am not referring to Dick Cheney, but Heinrich Himmler. But I can forgive the reader for mistaking one for the other.

In the Third Reich’s polycracy, Field Marshal Hermann Goering’s decision to field 30 infantry divisions with Luftwaffe personnel was not a desperate effort to provide more ground troops to fight the invading allied armies, but provide him with the muscle to hold his claim as designated heir to the Reich if and when Herr Adolph kicked the bucket. Employing scarce technically trained air personnel as infantry cannon fodder was a "Grosse" waste of Germany’s decreasing military resources. Yet Goering knew that in the resulting power vacuum following Hitler’s death, he would have to compete with Himmlers’s SS, as well as other Nazi polycracies, to secure his position as the new Führer. The current Tom Cruise flick, Valkyrie, is based on the attempted coup by German Colonel Stauffenberg to assassinate Hitler to save Germany from fiery Gottdamerung. Had the Stauffenberg plan succeeded, there was a possibility that a civil war would have erupted in Germany, with Wermarcht under Erwin Rommel fighting for governmental control. With the ongoing accumulation of power in individual US agencies, it is not difficult to imagine a similar political struggle occurring within our own government departments. While it is far-fetched to think a firefight would develop between competing US agencies, say for example between the IRS and the ATF, there would be few of us that would not pay good money to watch it. I know I would.

The evolution of our government organizations into a polycratic system is another warning sign that the checks and balances outlined in the Constitution by the Founding Fathers are being discarded. The increase of power and resources given to appointees and departments, instead of addressing the nation’s various ills, produces counter-productivity and jealous infighting among them. It leads to individuals carving out niches of personal power for their own agendas and benefit. One need to only study the history of the first Director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, and see how he used that agency as his own personal intelligence gathering and blackmail cartel. Should this growing polycracy within the US government continue unchecked, citizens will be subject to an increasing schizophrenic government having turf wars with itself – all in the name of supposedly promoting the general welfare of its citizens.

Obama on the Attack on Gaza

As President-Elect Barack Obama vacationed in Hawaii on December 26, stopping off to watch a dolphin show with his family at Sea Life Park, an Israeli air raid besieged the impoverished Gaza Strip, killing at least 285 people and injuring over 800 more.

It was the single deadliest attack on Gaza in over 20 years and Obama’s initial reaction on what could be his first real test as president was "no comment." Meanwhile, Israel has readied itself for a land invasion, amassing tanks along the border and calling up 6,500 reserve troops.

On Sunday’s Face the Nation, Obama’s Senior Adviser David Axelrod explained to guest host Chip Reid how an Obama administration would handle the situation, even if it turns for the worst.

"Well, certainly, the president-elect recognizes the special relationship between the United States and Israel. It’s an important bond, an important relationship. He’s going to honor it ... And obviously, this situation has become even more complicated in the last couple of days and weeks. As Hamas began its shelling, Israel responded. But it’s something that he’s committed to."

Reiterating the rationale that Israel’s bombing of Gaza was an act of retaliation and not of aggression, Axelrod, on behalf of the Obama administration, continued to spread the same misinformation as President Bush: that Hamas was the first to break the ceasefire agreement, which ended over a week ago, and Israel was simply responding judiciously.

Aside from the fact that Israel’s response was anything but judicious, the idea that it was Hamas who broke the six-month truce is a complete fabrication.

On the night of the U.S. election, Israel fired missiles on Gaza that were aimed at closing down a tunnel operation they believed Hamas was building in order to kidnap Israeli soldiers. The carnage left in the wake of Israel’s bombing of Gaza over the past six weeks has killed dozens of Palestinians.

"The escalation towards war could, and should, have been avoided. It was the State of Israel which broke the truce, in the 'ticking tunnel' raid ... two months ago," the Israeli peace group Gush Shalom wrote in a press release. "Since then, the army went on stoking the fires of escalation with calculated raids and killings, whenever the shooting of missiles on Israel decreased."

Over the last seven years only 17 Israeli citizens have been killed by Palestinian rocket fire, which makes it extremely difficult for Israeli politicians, which are in the midst of an election, to argue that their response has been proportionate or defensible in any way.

The asymmetry of the conflict leaves an opening for harsh criticism from the soon-to-be president Barack Obama. He has every right to oppose Israel’s belligerence. The international community and the majority of public opinion are on his side. Certainly he knows Israel’s disproportionate response has inflicted insurmountable pain on Palestinians as well as what the blockade has done by keeping vital medical and other supplies from reaching Gaza, where hundreds have died as a result of inadequate medical treatment.

While bombs fall on a suffocating Palestinian population and Israeli forces prepare for a ground invasion, Obama is monitoring the situation from afar after a talk with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other Bush administration officials. This isn’t leadership; it’s a continuation of a policy that has left Palestinians with little recourse, let alone hope for lasting peace.

US veto blocks UN anti-Gaza attack resolution

Two things to note about this report: first, the US is still Israel's staunch supporter/apologizer and refuses to acknowledge any wrongdoing on their part; second, the use of the word "anti-Israeli" and "anti-Israel" regularly to describe these actions of the UN, which denotes the UN hates Israel or is anti-semitic. I changed the original title of this article in my title here to illustrate that point.

The UN Security Council has been unable to force an end to Israeli attacks against Gaza due to the intervention of the United States.

Washington once again used its veto powers on Sunday to block a resolution calling for an end to the massive ongoing Israeli attacks against the Gaza Strip.

The council has only been able to issue a 'non-binding' statement that calls on Israel to voluntarily bring all its military activities in the besieged region to an immediate end.

The statement comes as Israel has begun a fresh wave of air strikes on Gaza on Sunday, killing at least six people. At least 230 people were killed and 800 wounded in similar attacks on Saturday. The number of Palestinians deaths has so far risen to 271.

The council called on the parties to address the humanitarian crisis in the territory but has not criticized the Israeli air attacks.

Croatian UN Ambassador Neven Jurica read out the non-binding statement on behalf of the 15-member body that "called for an immediate halt to all violence" and on the parties "to stop immediately all military activities."

"The members of the Security Council expressed serious concern at the escalation of the situation in Gaza," he said, as the president of the council.

The council also requested the opening of border crossings into Gaza to address the serious humanitarian and economic needs in Gaza and to ensure medical treatment and a continuous supply of food and fuel.

US representative to the UNSC, Zalmay Khalilzad, defended the Israeli move, saying Tel Aviv has the right to self-defense.

"I regret the loss of any of all innocent life," he said, adding that Hamas rockets precipitated this situation.

Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip say they fire rockets into Israel in retaliation for the daily Israeli attacks against them. Unlike the state-of-the-art Israeli weapons and ammunition, the home-made Qassam rockets rarely cause casualties.

The US, a staunch ally to Israel, has so far vetoed over 40 anti-Israeli resolutions sought by the council since 1972.

Since 2004, Washington has prevented the adoption of four other resolutions that called for Tel Aviv to halt its operations in the Gaza Strip.

FDA on the attack against family farms

In the past few years we have suffered food contamination in products from China, Mexico and places unknown. Thanks to CAFTA [trade illegal] provisions we do not even have the right to have our food labeled with country of origin and have no way of knowing where it came from, how it was produced or what the standards for processing were, if any. The FDA appears to view this as a minor problem.

Then came the National Animal Identification System. Of course this only applies to American family owned farms, but not to corporate farms. This is a system of RFID tagging of every animal, even those not used for food, and a data base system that is GPS operated. This means every animal tagged in this system can be located using GPS.

Family farms are required to RFID tag every chicken, pig, cow, horse, duck, dog, cat, or other animal. Corporate farm animals on the other hand, are not. Massive herds of animals are counted as [one], and the fee for these herds is as if only one animal exists. Family farms pay by the head. Also, the family farmer or rancher must report within 24 hours the death of an animal for any reason, including food production.

The immediate question that comes to mind is: Why would the federal government be interested in locating every domestic animal in the country?

Turns out it isn’t so much the tracking of animals as it is controlling the food supply and the rights to land, ownership and privacy.

Under NAIS, the farm owner is required to register his property with the FDA. Only it isn’t his property any longer. Now, the owner is listed as the operator [manager] of the PREMISES. Property is no longer property…..implying ownership. It is now a [premise] and is consigned to the FDA. The operator [manager] is simply the person running the operation. Every state complying with NAIS is forcing farmers and ranchers to obtain a Premise ID…….in effect rendering them tenants on their own land, rather than owners.

The farmland and ranchland that has now been seized by the federal government under the auspices of the FDA is being used as collateral on the loans taken out with countries such as China and Japan among others, facilitating the bailout of Wall Street.

I found it odd that among all the reasons given as to why our animals should all be tagged and locatable with GPS, including some rare form of rabies that might occur or ecoli, salmonella or some other prefabricated bio-terrorist threat, no one mentioned the use of farmlands and ranchlands seized under the FDA rules being used for collateral on the national debt racked up by bailing out Wall Street.

So, if I understand all of this correctly, the crooks and thieves on Wall Street got to keep all their stolen loot, continue to receive millions in unearned bonuses and perks, will not be prosecuted for corruption and get to go home to their lavish accommodations……and the most valuable farmland in the world is being seized to accommodate this theft.

And if I understand the FDA correctly, they see no problem with China shipping contaminated food and infant formula into our country, and the FDA made no attempt to halt or impede the flow of products from China, but live in absolute fear of organic family farms with no history of problems here at home. Unless of course you count the charges of contamination levied against farms who refused to cooperate with this invasive agenda, in which case just because you work for the FDA you can say there were problems without any evidence whatsoever.

Behind all of this is the hidden intent. The intent is to eradicate all family owned farms and ranches in favor of multi-national corporate farms and ranches. Once food production is totally converted to corporations, who eats and what they eat will be the questions.

For some reason, the FDA sees no problems with GMO or the crops grown with mutated bacteria and viruses inherent in their genetic make-up. The FDA dismisses any reports of the adverse affects on the human body from consumption of GMO foods such as Morgellans or the reports of organ damage. Instead they attack organic farms which offer uncontaminated food.

The questions we all should be asking now are:

* Why would the government attempt to eradicate whole foods uncontaminated by genetic engineering?
* Why would organic farmers and ranchers pose a threat?
* Why are genetically altered foods not labeled?
* If genetically altered foods are safe, why was the Artic Seed Vault, containing thousands of organic and natural seeds species built? Why are there no genetically altered seeds included?
* What is the real purpose of tagging and tracking domestic animals in the US.

What we eat should be our choice. And we should have the right to know what we are consuming and where it came from and what has been done to alter it. The claims of increased production, better foods and healthier choices have all been shown to be false. Ask yourself why our own government is promoting and protecting this assault on our food supply, and who does it benefit?

You can bet that none of those profiting from this corruption of the food supply are consuming any of this frankenfood. They know better.

How the US Government Created the "Drug Problem" in the USA

Mili-Note: This man was one of the greatest exposers of the government drug fraud in our time. Sadly, he was gunned down by a Los Angeles police officer in 2007 in a somewhat questionable and freakish incident. Eighteenth-century German philosopher Georg Friedrich Hegel long ago developed, among other things, what he called the principle of "thesis, antithesis, synthesis" to explain the process of deliberately enacted social disorder and change as a road to power. To achieve a desired result, one deliberately creates a situation ("thesis,") devises a "solution," to solve the "problems" created by that situation ("antithesis,") with the final result being the ultimate goal of more power and control ("synthesis.") It is unsurprising Karl Marx and his disciples like Lenin and Trotsky, as well as the US government in its so-called War On Drugs, made this process a keystone of their drive for total control of all individual actions that, in their views, were not, in Mussolini s terms, "inside the state" and thus controllable by the same.

In September 1942, OSS director and Army Maj. Gen. William "Wild Bill" Donovan began his search for an effective "truth serum" to be used on POWs and captured spies. Beginning with a budget of $5,000 and the blessing of President Franklin Roosevelt, he enlisted the aid of a few prominent physicians and psychiatrists like George Estabrooks and Harry Murray as well as former Prohibition agent and notorious Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN) director Harry Anslinger.

The OSS/FBN team first tested a potent marijuana extract, tetrahydrocannabinol acetate (THCA), a colorless, odorless substance, lacing cigarettes or food items with it, and administering them to volunteer US Army and OSS personnel, all who eventually acquired the nickname "Donovan’s Dreamers." Testing was also conducted under the guise of treatment for shell shock.

Donovan’s team found that THCA, which they termed "TD," for "truth drug," induced "a great loquacity and hilarity," and even, in cases where the subject didn’t feel physically threatened, some useable "reefer madness." Peyote, morphine and scopolamine were judged too powerful to be used in effective interrogation. In light of all this, Donovan concluded, "The drug defies all but the most expert and search analysis, and for all practical purposes can be considered beyond analysis." The OSS did not, however, end the program. By that time, faced with the terrifying ship losses the USA was suffering from German U-boats, Donovan pressed on, hoping to find some effective chemical means to help interrogate captured U-boat sailors.

In May 1943, George Hunter White, an Army captain, OSS officer and former FBN agent, gave standard cigarettes laced with THCA to an unwitting August "Augie Dallas" Del Grazio, an influential New York City gangster. Del Grazio, who had by then had done prison stretches for assault and murder, had been one of the Mafia’s most notorious enforcers and narcotics smugglers. He operated an opium alkaloid factory in Turkey and was a key participant in the long-running Istanbul/Marsellies/NYC heroin pipeline commonly known as the "French Connection." Influenced by the THC, Del Grazio (who was also helping to smuggle spies and Mafiosi into German-occupied Italy) revealed volumes of vital information about underworld operations, including the names of several high ranking city and state officials who took bribes from the Mob. Donovan was encouraged by the results of White’s tests when he wrote, "Cigarette experiments indicated that we had a mechanism offering promise in relaxing prisoners to be interrogated."

Unsurprisingly, the extensive wartime German experiments with various hallucinogenic drugs at the Dachau concentration camp, directed by one Dr. Hubertus Strughold, later honored as "the father of aviation medicine," aroused great interest in the USA especially after an October 1945 Navy technical mission to Dachau reported in detail on Strughold’s work. So great, in fact, that when the OSS and its successor, the CIA, imported 800 German scientists of various specialties under the auspices of the infamous "Project Paperclip" during 1945-55, it made sure to include Dr. Strughold.

Dr. Strughold’s barbaric "medical experiments," for which his subordinates were tried and convicted as war criminals at Nuremburg, were nothing more than a series of bizarre and unspeakably brutal tortures. Even so, he learned a lot about human behavior and mescaline, a natural alkaloid present in the peyote cactus. Mescaline, long central to many Native American religious rituals and first chemically isolated in 1896, is a phenethylamine whose ergoline skeleton is also contained in lysergic acid (a tryptamine.)

Sandoz Labs chemist Dr. Albert Hofmann also discovered a lysergic acid derivative called ergonovine, a medication used to retard excessive postpartum uterine bleeding. Based on his work with ergonovine, Dr. Hofmann first derived d-lysergic acid diethylamide tartrate-25 (LSD, a refined alkaloidal liquid byproduct of a rye fungus, ergot) in a series of experiments in Zurich in 1938. He used the naturally occurring lysergic acid radical, the common item in all ergot alkaloids, as the major component of the substance. Further experiments in this vein yielded psilocybin, derived from the Mexican Psilocybe cubensis mushroom, hydergine, essential today in the improvement of cerebral circulation in geriatric patients, and dihydroergotamine, an important ingredient in blood pressure medication.

The well-read and broadly educated Dr. Hofmann knew ergot had a long natural and cultural history as both medicine and poison. Ancient Greek midwives used to give an ergot-based, gruel-like drink, called kykeon, to their patients about to give birth. Kykeon was also consumed during the autumn Eleusinia, the ancient Greek agricultural festival celebrated in honor of the goddess of agriculture, Demeter. Across the Atlantic, sacramental Maya morning glories, beautifully depicted at the ancient Mayan temple-palace complex at Teotihuacán, Mexico, dating to about 1450, also contain ergot-based alkaloids.

However, the mindset the CIA had in its drug research work was far different from that of Dr. Hofmann’s. To our Cold War spymasters, ex-Nazis like Dr. Strughold were definitely evil, but they were definitely useful as well. This pervasive amoral pragmatism led, of course, to the extensive and notorious MK-ULTRA experiments in which, for nearly 25 years, thousands of everyday Americans, both military and civilian, were heavily dosed with numerous very potent artificial psychoactive drugs, often without their knowledge or consent.

This phenomenon of the obsessive "interests of national security" expediency combined with our celebrity-obsessed pop culture that gleefully raises and shamelessly promotes snake oil hustlers as well as the pharmaceutical industry’s pricey "pill for every ill" philosophy, was a form of incompetence and arrogance far more hazardous than any synthetic alkaloid ever developed and came as no surprise to those like Dr. Hofmann. LSD, invaluable in psychiatric treatment – actor Cary Grant was cured of alcoholism by carefully administered doses of the drug under close medical supervision – is thousands of times more potent than the traditional herbal mixtures. In fact, it is thousands of times more potent than the milder of the entheogenic alkaloids. It is effective at doses of as little as a ten-millionth of a gram, which makes it 5,000 times more potent than mescaline. It should not be taken without training or supervision.

The Navy tested mescaline as part of its 1947-53 Project CHATTER. MK-ULTRA was first organized in 1949 by Richard Helms under the direction of Allen Dulles as Project BLUEBIRD. Two years later, it was renamed ARTICHOKE (after one of Dulles’s favorite foods) then termed MK-ULTRA in 1953, finally becoming MK-SEARCH in 1965 until the program's "official termination" eight years later. MK-ULTRA was directly responsible for the wide underground availability of LSD, phencyclidine (PCP – also called "angel dust"), dimethyltryptamine (DMT), 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine (STP) and other powerful synthetic psychoactive drugs in the 1960s. In the early 1950s, the CIA and the Army had contacted Sandoz requesting several kilograms of LSD for use in the test program. Dr. Hofmann and Sandoz refused this request, so Director Dulles persuaded the Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical luminary Eli Lilly (later the pioneers of and chief cheerleaders for the widely prescribed antidepressant Prozac) to synthesize the drug contrary to existing international patent accords--making the US government and Lilly the first illegal domestic manufacturers and distributors of LSD.

These were distributed via the agency’s sometime allies in organized crime and through the FBI’s counterintelligence programs (COINTELPROs) directed against various activist groups of the period. The actual definition of the term MK-ULTRA remains unclear but a former Army Special Forces captain, John McCarthy, who ran the CIA’s Saigon-based Operation Cherry which targeted the Cambodian ruler Prince Sihanouk for assassination, claimed that MK-ULTRA stood for "Manufacturing Killers Utilizing Lethal Tradecraft Requiring Assassination."

On April 10, 1953, in a speech at Princeton University, CIA director Allen Dulles (further feeding the already widespread but misguided fear about the high effectiveness of the alleged Chinese "brainwashing" of US POWs in the Korean conflict) warned that the human mind was a "malleable tool," and that the "brain perversion techniques" of the Reds were "so subtle and so abhorrent" that "the brain&becomes a phonograph playing a disc put on its spindle by an outside genius over which it has no control."

Propaganda, in its simplest form, is condemning one’s opponent publicly for doing what one is already doing privately. Dulles, of course, was that very "outside genius." Three days after warning assembled Princetonians of the disturbing ramifications of these techniques, he had directed MK-ULTRA researchers to perfect them. Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA’s expert on lethal poisons, (who reputedly was the inspiration for director Stanley Kubrick’s bizarre "Dr. Strangelove" character played by Peter Sellers in the 1964 film of the same title) headed up the operation as director of the Chemical Division of the Technical Services Staff and, via a front organization called "The Society For Human Ecology," distributed $25 million in drug research grants to Harvard, Stanford, UC Berkeley and other institutions.

Meanwhile, George Hunter White, of THCA-laced "Lucky Strikes" fame, had returned to the FBN (now the DEA) at war’s end and continued to research behavior modifying drugs. In 1955, when MK-ULTRA was running full throttle, he was a high ranking FBN administrator who helped the Agency develop and implement a similar operation called Midnight Climax. In this infamous scheme, "safehouses" staffed with prostitutes were established in San Francisco. The hookers lured men from local taverns back to these safehouses after their drinks had been previously spiked with LSD. White’s team secretly filmed the subsequent events in each house. The purpose of these so-called "national security brothels" was to enable the CIA to experiment with the use of sex and mind altering drugs to extract information from test subjects, and it was planned, from spies, POWs, defectors and saboteurs.

Midnight Climax was terminated after eight years when CIA Inspector General John Earman charged that "the concepts involved in manipulating human behavior are found by many people within and outside the Agency to be distasteful and unethical." He stated that "the rights and interest of U.S. citizens were placed in jeopardy." Earman further noted LSD "had been tested on individuals at all social levels, high and low, native American and foreign." Richard Helms, MK-ULTRA’s bureaucratic godfather, summarily rebuffed Earman’s charges, claiming that "positive operational capacity to use drugs is diminishing owing to a lack of realistic testing. Tests," Helms continued, "were necessary to keep up with the Soviets." However, Helms reversed himself a year later when testifying before the Warren Commission investigating the JFK assassination, claiming that "Soviet research has consistently lagged five years behind Western research."

Upon retirement from civil service in 1966, White wrote a startling farewell letter to Dr. Gottlieb. He reminisced about his Midnight Climax work. His comments were frightening:

"I was a very minor missionary, actually a heretic, but I toiled wholeheartedly in the vineyards because it was fun, fun, fun. Where else could a red-blooded American boy lie, kill, cheat, steal, rape and pillage with the sanction and blessing of the all-highest?"

Where else indeed, but as a member of what would later become the hypocritical War on (Some) Drugs?

By the end of the 1950s the CIA was funding just about every qualified LSD researcher and psychologist it could find, through such contractors as the Society for the Study of Human Ecology, the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation, and the Geschichter Fund for Medical Research. Author John Marks, in his 1975 book, The Search for the Manchurian Candidate, identified the CIA’s LSD research pioneers as:

* Dr. Robert Hyde at Boston Psychopathic Hospital
* Dr. Harold Abramson at Mt. Sinai Hospital and Columbia University in New York City
* Dr. Carl Pfeiffer at the University of Illinois Medical School, Champaign-Urbana
* Dr. Harris Isbell of the NIMH-sponsored Addiction Research Center in Lexington, Ky.
* Dr. Louis Jolyon West at the University of Oklahoma, Stillwater
* Dr. Harold Hodge at the University of Rochester (N.Y.)

However, there were prominent critics of the US government’s activities, the earliest among them being Aldous Huxley, the famed author of the chillingly prescient 1932 novel Brave New World (which described a totalitarian society whose population was completely controlled by forcible administration of a government-mandated "happiness drug" called "soma.") While taking mescaline supplied by famed English surgeon Dr. Humphrey Osmond (who discovered the close similarities between the molecular structures of adrenaline and mescaline), Huxley completed another novel entitled The Doors of Perception in 1954. In that book, the novelist described his intensely personal vision of the world around him:

"I continued to look at the flowers, and in their living light I seemed to detect the qualitative equivalent of breathing – but of a breathing without returns to a starting point, with no recurrent ebbs but only a repeated flow from beauty to heightened beauty, from deeper to ever deeper meaning. Words like ‘grace’ and ‘transfiguration’ came to my mind&Those idiots (MK-ULTRAns) want to be Pavlovians; Pavlov never saw an animal in its natural state, only under duress. The ‘scientific’ LSD boys do the same with their subjects. No wonder they report psychotics."

Obviously, this isn’t a typical CIA spook writing, and, given Huxley’s incredible mind, creative vision and compassion, we’re not talking about a moron or a mental case either. Which means that giving someone mescaline while they’re being tortured or lobotomized or electrocuted at Dachau will only tell you a lot about torture, lobotomies and electrocution, not about mescaline.

As author Marks noted:

It would become supreme irony that the CIA’s enormous search for weapons among drugs – fueled by the hope that spies could control life with genius and machines – would wind up helping to create the wandering, uncontrollable minds of the counterculture."

Admiral’s son and musician Jim Morrison led The Doors, [of Perception] a quartet of Liverpudlians sang of "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds," while the Rolling Stones dropped transparent hints about "Mother’s Little Helper." To take a lesson from Orwell, what is more important about the 1960s, indeed, about any period in history, is not so much what really happened as how that period is remembered publicly decades later.

The public memories of that particular era were carefully manipulated in great part by the deliberate creation and promotion (via television and the recording industry) of the phony and in reality quite small "drug/rock/hippie subculture." The first underground LSD labs were actually set up by the FBI in 1963 in both New York City and San Francisco. Many began to incorrectly confuse the ancient medical art of herbalism with the shenanigans of amateur basement "flower-power" and "biker" chemists. Overenthusiastic pitchmen like social psychologist Dr. Timothy Leary and Beat poet Allen Ginsberg sadly failed to sufficiently stress that key difference, although the technically competent Leary clearly understood the artificially high potency of LSD.

Leary (and his longtime associate, psychologist Richard Alpert) matured professionally in a CIA-funded research world. In 1948, Leary, then a UC Berkeley graduate student, attended the yearly convention of the left-wing American Veterans’ Council in Milwaukee. There he met CIA officer Cord Meyer. Meyer’s professional specialty was infiltrating and discrediting various organizations deemed "un-American" or "disloyal." Meyer persuaded Leary to help him. Leary acknowledged Meyer’s influence, crediting him with "helping me understand my political-cultural role more clearly."

During 1954-59 Leary was the director of clinical research and psychology at the Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Oakland, Calif. The personality test that made him famous, "The Leary," was actually used by the CIA to test prospective employees. A grad school classmate of Leary’s, CIA contractor Frank Barron, worked with the Berkeley Institute for Personality Assessment and Research, which was funded and staffed by CIA psychologists. In 1960 Barron, with government funding, founded the Harvard Psychedelic Drug Research Center. Leary followed Barron to Harvard, becoming a lecturer in psychology where he remained for three years. Leary’s Harvard associates included former chief OSS psychologist Harry Murray, who had monitored the early OSS "truth serum" experiments, and numerous other knowing CIA contractors. One of Dr. Murray’s many test subjects was a Harvard undergraduate math major named Theodore Kaczynski.

In the spring of 1963, Leary and Alpert left Harvard and founded the International Foundation for Internal Freedom (IFIF) – later renamed the Castalia Foundation – on a 2,500-acre estate in the small upstate New York community of Millbrook. There, the pair of psychologists continued their hallucinogenic drug research and soon became the chief investigative target of an ambitious Dutchess County district attorney named G. Gordon Liddy. Multimillionaire William Mellon Hitchcock generously bankrolled the founding and operation of IFIF/Castalia and later financed a huge black-market LSD manufacturing operation.

Even so, Leary carefully stressed proper mindset, setting and dosages in a book he coauthored with Alpert and Ralph Metzner, The Psychedelic Experience. It was based on an ancient Tibetan shamanic manual, The Book of the Dead. The latter work referred to an herbal tea similar in content to but far less powerful than LSD, and insisted on mental discipline as an inherent part of the process. The Incans of Andean South America, for instance, were an invaluable source of medical knowledge, and used whole herbs like ayahuasca and the coca leaf, not their artificially refined alkaloids, and spiritual technique was also taught as an key part of the process.

However, much like the crusading "drys" before and during Prohibition, the MK-ULTRA inquisitors with their police state mentality in concert with misinformed and emotionally distressed LSD users, had found their "devil drug," (the term used by the Harrison Tax Act advocates in the 1910s and Marijuana Tax Act backers in the 1930s) replete with tragic tales of already emotionally distressed and lonely young people quite unprepared for such an artificially powerful entheogen. It was also well within CIA policy to randomly distribute LSD laced with the lethal poison strychnine so as to create "horror stories" useful as propaganda. Dr. Hofmann himself chemically confirmed the presence of pure strychnine in several random street samples of LSD.

Consistent with its policy of deliberately confusing the beneficial ancient herbs with extremely dangerous synthetic alkaloid derivatives, the CIA surreptitiously distributed of these synthetic compounds, termed "psychedelics," to the public. One of them was STP, originally developed as an incapacitating agent for the Army in 1964 at Dow Chemical. Dow even made the STP formula public information three years later. This potent synthetic put many unsuspecting people on a three-day trip, and sent many, hysterical with anxiety, to the emergency room. That, of course, was the purpose of its distribution.

During 1955-75, the Army tested LSD (termed EA-1729) and PCP on several of its enlisted men at what was then the headquarters of its Chemical Corps, Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland, something described in detail by Bill Kurtis in a televised 1995 A&E Investigative Reports segment titled "Bad Trip to Edgewood." The CIA also tested PCP (in conjunction with electroshock "therapy" and sleep deprivation) at Allain Memorial Institute in Montreal under the direction of the notorious Canadian psychiatrist Dr. Ewen Cameron. The Chemical Corps (whose commander in the 1950s, Lt. General William Creasy, advocated a new military strategy of LSD-based "nonkill warfare") then stockpiled PCP for use as a "nonlethal incapacitant." Excess doses of PCP, reported the CIA, could "lead to convulsions and death." Soon, PCP was flooding the streets.

Edgewood also received an average of 400 product "rejects" a month from major US pharmaceutical firms. These "rejects" were actually drugs found to be commercially useless because of their demonstrated hazards and numerous undesirable side effects. In 1958, Edgewood obtained its first sample of a "reject" called phenylbenzeneacetic acid (BZ) developed by pharmaceutical giant Hoffmann-LaRoche, later known by its street nickname as "brown acid."

BZ (some 10,000 times as powerful as LSD) inhibits the production of hormones which aid the brain’s transfer of messages and instructions across nerve endings (synapses), thereby severely disrupting normal human perceptual, behavioral and sensory patterns. Its effects generally last about three days, although symptoms-migraine headaches, giddiness, disorientation, auditory and visual hallucinations, and erratic if not maniacal behavior – could persist for as long as six weeks. "During the period of acute effects," noted an Army physician, "the person is completely out of touch with his environment." The Army also developed artillery shells and rockets with warheads able to deliver large dosages of BZ to selected targets.

In the summer of 1964, Beat novelist Ken Kesey (the author of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and who had been an MK-ULTRA test subject at Stanford along with Allen Ginsberg and Grateful Dead musician Bob Hunter) launched a yearlong cross-country trip in a Day-Glo painted school bus filled with friends called "Merry Pranksters." The Merry Pranksters distributed thousands of doses of LSD along the way (a phenomenon colorfully described in author Tom Wolfe’s 1969 novel, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test) supplied by one Ronald Hadley Stark. Stark (who died in 1984) was a CIA operative fluent in five languages with access to unlimited public funds and numerous high-level contacts in business and government throughout the world.

For instance, when the underground manufacture and distribution of LSD was suddenly derailed in 1969 due to the scarcity of its key ingredient, ergotamine tartrate, and increasing federal law enforcement pressure, Stark, via the Laguna Beach, Calif.-based Brotherhood of Eternal Love, a small group of local surfers led by chemist Nicholas Sand, got it quickly back on track. For five years, Stark, aided by the Castle Bank of the Bahamas (which pioneered the art of money laundering for the Mob) and his contacts in a French pharmaceutical firm, facilitated the mass production and distribution (via the Brotherhood and other groups) an even more powerful strain of LSD nicknamed "orange sunshine." This firm also manufactured BZ. Stark (who operated LSD labs in Brussels and Paris as well) claimed he was going to supply orange sunshine as an offensive weapon to CIA-backed Tibetan rebels fighting the Chinese occupation.

Stark also was a close friend of the Los Angeles founders of a small breakaway Scientology sect called "The Process Church of the Final Judgement," English expatriates Robert DeGrimston Moore and Mary Ann McClean.

Regular attendees of the Process Church included members of the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones and other prominent pop performers as well as an ex-convict and wannabe rock musician named Charles Manson. Manson and his followers became heavy users of orange sunshine – the trademark "bad acid" of the day – which they were all on when, on Manson’s orders, they carried out the brutal August 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders. When Stark (who is believed to have distributed an estimated 50 million doses of LSD during his Agency career) was arrested for drug trafficking in Bologna in 1975, Italian magistrate Giorgio Floridia ordered his release on the grounds that he had been a CIA agent since 1960. Judge Floridia documented and justified this using a list of Stark’s numerous intelligence contacts.

These were and are all classic government COINTELPRO-style tricks – this is how natural herbs and their mild, pharmaceutical-grade derivatives were quickly and easily made lethal and consequently demonized. How was this done? First, foolish claims were made that there was no difference between safe whole herbs and their potentially deadly ultra-refined alkaloids, next, the best of the traditional herbs and the milder of the pharmaceutical-grade alkaloid derivatives were made unavailable, and finally, the streets were flooded with potentially deadly synthetics. Deliberate perversions of science like angel dust continue to be a great propaganda tool for our diehard drug warriors, and the worn catchall excuse of "the interest of national security" is used to justify appalling covert drug capers ranging from CIA-sponsored heroin production and trafficking in Southeast Asia in the 1960s to the Bush/Clinton/Mena/Nicaragua cocaine-for-arms smuggling schemes in the 1980s.

These Constitution-shredding police state methods were adapted from the Nazis and the Soviets by and large and were applied by the CIA, NSA, DEA, BATF, IRS and FBI against us. Scores of groups, ranging from the American Indian Movement and Black Panthers to militias and religious organizations like the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas (in which the government first falsely charged as illegal methamphetamine dealers in order to get a Posse Comitatus Act waiver to use military force against them) were either disrupted by agents provocateur-style riots, bombings and armed standoffs, smeared in the mainstream news media through the "Reichstag Fire" approach, or, in the case of the Davidians, physically exterminated. The War on Some Drugs is merely a horrible extension and intensification of these tried-and-true Hegelian methods, a "war" in which we all lose.

The Immortal Words of Patrick Henry

On March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry spoke the great words of freedom. They resonate oh so clearly today. Here are some excerpts from Henry's magnificent speech:

"This is no time for ceremony. The questing before the House is one of awful moment for the country. For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery. . . . Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself guilty of treason towards my country."

"Mr. President, it is natural for man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it."

"They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction?
